Blog 19: Senior Project & ESLRs
1. The ESLR I excelled in most in my senior project is being an effective communicator.
2. Through what I've learned from my mentorship, research & experiences, I've been able to approach my peers & superiors with composure & more of an open mind. I've improved on being a good listener & being there for those in need, whether I know them personally or not. This includes the people in my class, at my work & people I talk to from day to day. My mentorship has taught me how to view things from different perspectives & when it is appropriate to say certain things, such as giving suggestions to improve someone else's life. I've learned how to be more patient with others & how to make sure I convey my opinions without being misunderstood of the message I want to get across. My experience so far with my senior project has taught me to be more conscious with my interactions with the people around me.
3. My proof is the fact that I've become patient enough to deal with the children that I would have absolutely no tolerance for a year ago.

Blog 18: 2-Hour Meeting Answer #3
1. How can a licensed therapist best serve an abused individual?
2. A licensed therapist can best serve an abused individual by introducing them to join in open or closed group therapy sessions along with the private sessions with you.
3. This would be beneficial to your client because it would allow them to be around other people with similar feelings & situations. By being around others who share the same emotions & hardships, it helps your client feel more understood & it will help your client move forward from their problems. It would allow your client to see that they can reach out to others for support while going to you for guidance & further assistance.
4. This answer is derived from my mentorship at the Pomona Community Crisis Center under Kele Stahl. At this center, most clients participate in these group therapies in addition to private counseling. & Through my observations & advice from my mentor, I was able to find that it was easier on the client's load to have various degrees of support.
5. I plan on researching about the benefits & different kinds of group therapies to further help my justification for my answer.

Blog 16: 2-Hour Meeting Answer #2
1. How can a licensed therapist best serve an abused individual?
2. A licensed therapist can best serve an abused individual with proper communication.
3. Licensed clinical social work is more than just "talking" to your client, it's talking to them with a purpose & a certain direction. Being able to communicate with your client & make sure you understand their needs is essential because you can't assist them in any way without knowing so. It's also because you need to be acquainted with each of your clients' individual habits, needs, etc. Each person is unique, you can't approach all of your clients with the same method. It has to be customized to the individual. Communication also plays a key role in helping the client feel like they are known & that you are attuned with them. This will lead to a relationship with trust, therefore allowing the client to be more open to help.
4. My third interview with Luna Gorlick, LCSW, MA, really helped me find this answer. Most of the articles I came across said that licensed clinical social work wouldn't be what it is without communication in general.
5. I plan to continue my study of answer #2 by continuing to observe how the counselors at my internship communicate with the clients there during one-on-one sessions & group sessions, & pay attention to how they talk to each individual.

Blog 2: Topic Choice
a. What is your topic & why?
b. What do you hope to accomplish this year with this topic?
- My topic is clinical social work (LCSW) & I chose this because I feel like I would have an advantage in the field in the future if I allow myself to get my feet wet now. I'm positive that I want to pursue clinical social work as my career & what better opportunity would I have to learn more about it than to have it as my senior project topic? I also feel like if I have more of a background in working in the social work environment, it would possibly look better on my resume. Most of all, I want to do what I can to help people as soon as I can. I really want to be involved in this field & I really don't want to wait until my junior year of college to really do so. I get the most satisfaction from knowing that I helped another individual deal with a hard time in their life. I really hope I can experience this feeling as much as I can throughout the year through my work.
b. What do you hope to accomplish this year with this topic?
- As an iPoly citizen, I hope to become the open minded & understanding person that people are comfortable confiding in. Although my experience at iPoly is minimal, I did learn how to be more open minded to other people's ideas through the projects I participated in. I can't successfully help people with their obstacles if I don't allow myself to understand their reasoning & background. I can't understand things like that without keeping an open mind to ideals other than my own.
- As an effective communicator, I hope to make more people realize that they never alone in any dilemma. Too many people in the world believe that they have no one & that no one understands how they feel. I want to be the person who proves to them that no one is ever alone & that someone is always willing to listen. I hope to prove that through lending my listening ear, being a shoulder to lean on, being a the hand to guide someone to something better & so much more. But of course, I can never allow myself to forget that I am also a growing person who has my moments of feeling alone. By remembering this, I can hope that I can display that mutual feeling of loneliness & I can hope that I can allow myself to have a stronger connection with my patient.
- As an effective learner, I hope to apply what I learn from other's experiences to my own life. They say that one of the best ways to learn is to observe. I feel that I will truly learn something new every day, such what I should cherish more after hearing from someone else's misfortune. I also feel like I will grow more & more as a person along with my patient.
- As an effective user of technology, I hope to be up to date with current issues, trends, etc. I feel that if I know what's currently going on in the world, I can be a more effective social worker. I can give advice & guidance that would be more applicable to whatever is going on at that moment in society. You wouldn't want to give your patient advice that would applicable to society's standards in the 1970's when you live in the 2010's.
