Blog 14: Independent Component 1

  • Literal.
    • I, Brittany Ho, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.
    • Adrian of YMCA, 9096236433.
    • Independent Component Log I
    • Every Wednesday, I went to volunteer at the daycare at YMCA from around 4 PM to 8 PM.
  • Interpretive.
    • During my hours, I was responsible for watching over the kids & keeping them occupied. I would draw with them, have them do activities & play games with them. I would also help some of the kids with their homework if they had any, or help with them anything else they needed, such as tying their shoes. I always made sure I was interacting with the kids in some way to ensure that I was for one, doing my job & two, helping myself build tolerance for children. Not only did I make sure the kids had fun, but I also helped make sure that they were being responsible & not misbehaving too much. To make sure I reached my 30 hours minimum, I usually arrived a little early at 4:30 PM with Damaris in case some kids decided to show up early & I would leave at 8 PM after all the kids have been picked up by their parents.

  • Applied.
    • The connection that I've made with this & my senior project is that I've expanded on my ability to observe behavior more closely & I've trained myself to be a little more patient than I was before with children. To have patience is an essential thing in clinical social work & I feel that it's really important that I'm attacking this problem now instead of much later. I was also able to build on my ability to approach each child based on their behavior. Clinical social work is full of subjective approaches & although I was only able to practice this with children, it's a start.
